A kraft paper facility partnered with PRG with a goal to extend roll life on their two-roll calender stack and to reduce scrap related to the quality of their calender rolls.

With PRG ground rolls in the calender stack, there was an immediate improvement in the quality of the product and the run time between regrinds. The run life of this particular roll stack was quadrupled from 6 months to a full 24 months. Additional analysis suggest the rolls could run even longer.

Caliper variation data confirmed that even with the longer run life of PRG rolls, caliper variation remained in control. The analysis on this particular calender stack demonstrated that even with a 24 month roll runtime, the product remained well within specification. Servicing calender rolls every two years instead of every 6 months leads to hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings. The reduction of process variation from PRG’s tight-tolerance grinding can be valued even higher.
