5% Smoothness Improvement at a Linerboard Facility

In a paper machine, the calender directly impacts paper smoothness. The paper sheet is deformed under pressure and temperature and is stretched horizontally while its structure is condensed and compacted vertically. Through this process, properties such as smoothness, gloss, and caliper are improved. Any imperfections in the calender roll surface will show up on the paper surface.

A linerboard facility wanted to investigate smoothness improvements attained by grinding their calender rolls for improved surface finish and quality. The facility partnered with Precision Roll Grinders to study their paper’s performance before and after precision grinding.

Upon installation of the rolls with improved profile, smoothness of the product improved by 5% across four paper grades. On average, this metric dropped from a value of 192 to a value of 182. This data demonstrates a clear correlation between roll surface precision and the finished board's printability, providing a measurable return on investment for the facility.
