Coated Bleached Board Mill Improves CD Moisture Variation by 30% Through Crown Change
Published on July 8, 2026
Minimizing cross-machine direction (CD) moisture variation is crucial for proper paper machine performance and product quality. A uniform sheet dries more efficiently, improving machine runability, material use, and final product uniformity. Additionally, energy is conserved when the dryer section sees a more uniform sheet, allowing for reduced steam usage or higher machine speed without increasing steam.
A coated bleached board mill partnered with Precision Roll Grinders to improve CD moisture variation in their products. With a large wet streak running down the middle of the sheet, attention was turned towards the size press rolls. The optimal crown was calculated using Precision Roll Grinders' Crown Change Visualizer. PRG precision ground the size press rolls to the new crown profile and returned it to the mill.
Upon installation of the revised crown size press rolls, the paper sheet’s CD moisture variation decreased by 30%. With this improved moisture profile, the facility was able to realize the benefits of this process control for their machine operations and sheet quality.
