One Roll Matters

A large fine paper maker started seeing corrugation issues from their two-roll calender stack after just four months of operation. This led to paper quality issues that made the paper unsellable, taking the machine down until it could be fixed.

Precision Roll Grinders was able to receive, grind and return ship the worst of the two rolls within five days, quickly getting the machine up and running again.

With just one precision ground roll in the calender stack, the machine was running better than ever with corrugation and wrinkling issues virtually disappearing.

Calender rolls typically only run for four months at this mill. After five months of precision ground roll operation, caliper variation was studied to quantify the improvements. In addition to the longer run time, data showed a 6% reduction in calender variation over the period.

The customer was so pleased with the results from one roll, they precision ground both rolls at the next roll change.
