the Value of Precision Grinds the Press Section
Published on March 25, 2026
Variation in sheet moisture influences paper uniformity, machine runnability, and energy efficiency. The press section is the most efficient stage for water removal. It extracts 1.5 to 2 times more water per unit of energy than the dryer section. Precision roll profiles in the press section are critical, as even small deviations in crown, profile, or roundness can create wet streaks preventing uniform dewatering and increasing reject rates.
A paper mill partnered with PRG to evaluate the benefits of precision roll grinding in their press section. Having already seen measurable improvements with precision roll grinds in other sections of their machine, mill personnel wanted to see how PRG could improve their press section by applying precision grinds there, next.
The study results showed that PRG roll grinds reduced cross-directional moisture variation by nearly 17%, with no changes in clothing design. The mill achieved more efficient mechanical dewatering, delivering a more uniform moisture profile going into the dryer section. This allowed for increased operating speeds and greater production capacity valued at $31,000 per month, reinforcing the value of precision roll grinding.
