Uniform Profile, Uniform Mullens

The Mullens test is performed to measure the bursting strength of paper or paperboard using a Mullens Tester. This test critically shows paper makers how well the board can contain internal and external forces, simulating sever handling. Knowing how well the box will perform under pressure is one of the most important metrics in a paper mill.
A paper mill was struggling with excessive scrap due to high Two-Sigma Mullens and partnered with Precision Roll Grinders to study the correlation between precision roll grinds and Mullens test variation. Upon installation of precision ground calaender rolls, the mill saw a reduction in Mullens variation of over 40%.
Product that is created out-ofspecification is unsellable to the end user of the product, creating scrap. High Two-Sigma Mullens variation can cause upwards of 7% scrap, even when there is an average Mullens significantly higher than the lower limit.
Precision ground rolls not only make better paper, they run longer too. Contact us to be connected with your local account manager to learn more.
