Crown Change at Coated Bleach Board Facility Leads to 30% Reduction in Cross-Direction Moisture Variation
Published on February 9, 2026
A coated bleached board facility was struggling with high CD moisture variation in their product. An uneven moisture profile compromises machine runnability, downtime, energy use, material waste, reject rates, and final product uniformity. Low moisture variation is essential for smooth paper machine operations. Energy is conserved when the dryer section sees a more uniform sheet and machine speed can be increased as the same paper can be made with less steam.
With a large wet streak running through the middle of their sheet, the mill believed their size press rolls were undercrowned. The mill partnered with Precision Roll Grinders to investigate a crown change for their size press rolls. The facility’s moisture profile data was input into PRG’s crown change visualizer to determine the best crown specifications for their size press rolls.
Upon installation of precision ground press rolls with new crown heights, the paper sheet’s CD moisture variation decreased by 30%. With this improved moisture profile, the facility was able to realize the benefits of improved process control for their machine operations and improved product condition.
