Precision Grinds Lead to Target Basis Weight Reduction and Annual Savings of $145,000

In paper mills, fluctuations in sheet weight lead to excessive fiber use, inconsistent product, and manufacturing inefficiencies. Excessive basis weight variation requires mills to increase weight targets in order to remain in-spec at the lower side of the variation. Reducing basis weight variation allows the target weight to be reduced, while ensuring that paper quality is not compromised and material costs are held in control.

A brown and kraft paper facility partnered with Precision Roll Grinders to improve material usage through precision grinds of their calender roll stack. These rolls were ground for improved profile, journal concentricity to roll face, and roundness, all with no deviations larger than 0.0002 inches. After installation, the mill achieved a 0.4 lbs. reduction in basis weight variation.

This improvement allowed the mill to lower the target basis weight by 0.4 lbs while still meeting performance standards. The reduced fiber consumption resulted in an annual cost savings of $145,000.

Precision ground rolls bring tangible benefits to your process specifications. Through improved roll tolerances, we offer your facility reduced material use, reduced scrap, and reduced rejects.
