A paper mill operating a six-roll wet stack historically replaced its rolls with standard ground rolls every six months.  Upon partnering with Precision Roll Grinders and installing precision ground rolls, the mill noticed that the rolls still appeared to be in good condition, when they normally needed to be replaced. Routine roll changes had significant costs due to grinding, transport, and labor in addition to leading to premature reduction of roll chill depth.

Based on performance of the PRG ground rolls, the mill decided to extend its roll service interval from 6 months to 11 months. Quality metrics and roll performance were watched closely and after 11 months, the mill determined that the extended run time had not caused any negative issues and would be the new standard.

By extending roll life, the mill realized major savings across grinding, transportation, and maintenance costs. The total savings amounted to more than $200,000. This improvement came with no capital investment; only the decision to partner with PRG.
