3 Warning Signs of Press Section Roll Problems

Reduce costly inefficiencies and extend the life of your rolls

Machine downtime is not the only threat to your mill’s bottom line. During the life of a press section roll, inefficiencies that seem minor can accumulate expenses beyond the cost of a grind or repair.
Here are 3 warning signs that you may have a press roll problem:

1. Defective products. If the finished sheet has a poor profile or needs correction after leaving the press section, that’s one of the surest warning signs of a press section roll problem.
If you’re not sure that there are defects, ask or get a second opinion from a roll expert. For a more accurate assessment, look for a roll grinder who can send a qualified consultant to your mill.

2. Infrared heat or steam boxes. If your crew is constantly relying on infrared heat or steam boxes to produce a uniformly finished product, that’s the second-clearest sign that a press section roll could be the real problem.
If a press section roll is the problem, a band-aid solution like a  infrared profiler or a water spray profiling system will only give a false sense of resolution and add to your costs.

3. Excessive pulp. If you’re using extra pulp to add basis weight to overcome profile variations, that could be a sign of press section roll problems. Profile variations in your sheet are frequently the most common press section roll issue.
In an attempt to fix this issue, many mills increase basis weight in areas of low caliper. This increases pulp cost and steam usage.

The actual problem is often:
  • poor roll profiles,
  • offset crowns,
  • lack of roundness, or
  • all of these combined.
